Emission reduction in a coal-fired power station using technology
Project Name: Design, manufacturing and installation of emission reduction system
Client: ESKOM
Project Commencement Date: October 2019
Project Completion Date: In Progress
Project Category: Sustainability, responsible energy and technology
The emissions legislation issued by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) meant that by 2015 all existing power stations should conform to a 100 mg/Nm3 particulate emission level. It further states that all operating plant shall adhere to the new plant particulate emission limit of 50 mg/Nm3 by 2020.
There are cases where power stations are still not able to operate sustainably within the license limit. High particulate emissions are a concern, as the inability to run the plant below the stipulated emission limits results is non-compliance to legislation and as a result, the unit must be de-load to generate within the required emission limits. The loss of revenue as a result of running at reduced load is significant, and it also put a strain on a power grid.
Our appointment
Dynatron Group has been appointed for the engineering, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of a solution to improve the electrostatic precipitator’s efficiency and reliability with a reduction in particulate emissions at the Eskom’s coal fired power station in Mpumalanga, South Africa. To date, our engineering team has successfully completed three units and we have been re-appointed to complete the last 3 units for a period of 3 years ending July 2027.
The solution
The design team worked closely with the client’s engineers to research and develop a solution to address the problem at hand. High-Frequency Power Supplies (HFPS) were the recommended solution. The retrofit installation of the HFPS transformer sets on to an existing ESP plant will result in increased power input into the Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP) fields, improving the collection efficiency of the ESP and reducing the emission level.
